When Energy Rises, Direction Matters More

Turning rising energy into purposeful growth

Part of the FuturingNote series: Reflections Through the 24 Solar Terms.

We begin to chase too many directions with our energy…

There is a subtle shift that happens with the arrival of the solar term ‘Beginning of Summer’ (立夏 Lì Xià) which is the first solar term of summer.

It is not visible immediately but you can feel it.

The days stretch a little longer.
The air grows warmer and somewhere within you.. energy begins to rise.

From Foundation to Expansion

In the rhythm of the seasons, nothing happens abruptly.

Before the Beginning of Summer comes Grain Rain.. a period that quietly reminds us:

Growth begins long before it becomes visible.

Roots deepen.
Foundations stabilize.
Nutrients are absorbed beneath the surface.

And only after that.. growth begins to happen and accelerate.

Energy Is Not the Goal.. It’s a Resource

Li Xia (立夏) marks the moment when nature shifts from preparation to expression.

Crops enter a phase of rapid, visible growth.
Thunderstorms arrive.
The environment starts to become more intense and active.

So do we..

You may feel:

  • A surge of motivation
  • A desire to start new things
  • A restlessness to move forward

However, here is the distinction most people miss:

Spring builds the foundation.
Summer
puts the foundation to test.. intensely..

The Risk of Growing Without Ground

When energy rises without a strong foundation, something subtle happens.

We begin to:

  • Chase too many directions
  • Redefine goals midway
  • Confuse movement with progress

This is the quiet ‘goal-post shifting’.. not because we lack discipline,
but because the foundation was never fully anchored.

It is a pattern I explored in The Duchess Within Us.. how we unconsciously move the finish line, not out of failure, but out of instability beneath us when things get tough.

Growth without grounding becomes fragile.

Channeling Energy Into Meaningful Action

The lesson of Beginning of Summer is not simply to act.

It is to act with direction.

Instead of asking:

“What can I do with this energy?”

Ask:

“What have I been building toward?”

Because true growth is not about doing more.. it is about continuing to build what matters.

A Seasonal Check-In

This is a good moment to pause and reflect:

  • Health.. Are you supporting your body with adequate sleep and nutrients or just pushing through energy spikes blindly?
  • Career.. Are your directions aligned with something long-term or reacting to urgency?
  • Life.. Are you expanding intentionally or just expanding everywhere without a goal in mind?

Energy amplifies whatever direction you choose.

A Gentle Reminder from Tradition

Traditionally, during Beginning of Summer people would:

  • Check their weight
  • Eat seasonal foods
  • Adjust habits to the changing climate

These are not just rituals.

They are reminders that:

When conditions change, we do not just accelerate.. we re-calibrate.

A Natural Continuation

If Grain Rain was about laying the unseen foundation, Beginning of Summer is where that foundation begins to reveal itself.

What you are growing now is not new.. it is the result of what you have been quietly building all along.

Closing Reflection

Beginning of Summer is where energy becomes visible.. but visibility is not the beginning of growth. It is the continuation of what was quietly built before.

So as your energy rises, ask yourself:

Are you growing.. or are you simply expanding?

After all.. in the end:

Growth is not defined by how much energy you have,
but by how well it is rooted and how wisely it is directed.
